Mark Wilson tells Celtic to re-sign former star to solve goalkeeping woes

Mark Wilson has told Celtic to re-sign former goalkeeper David Marshall to solve the defensive woes at  the club this season. Whilst there has been a constant changing at the back in terms of the back four as well as the goalie, Celtic have really struggled with this lack of settled.

Speaking to The Huddle Podcast, Wilson has said that the club should look to sign Marshall to take over as No.1 and follow the lead of Rangers’ decision to resign Allan McGregor. McGregor rejoined the Ibrox club and has been pivotal in winning the league this season.

“A name that hasn’t went away from the summer that I think Celtic should go for again, just to get in the door as number one and it would sort out their problem – I think they should go for David Marshall,”

“People will say ‘it’s a step backwards, he’s 35 or 36 years old’. But I look across the city and see Allan McGregor coming to Rangers. Was he 38 when he came? 37? I see pictures of him holding the Player of the Year for Scotland trophy.

“I know he’s still got another year to go, but surely Marsh would be up for coming back to Glasgow.”

Marshall has one year left on his deal with Derby and as one of the senior pros, Wayne Rooney may be relying on him. However, the draw of a Celtic return may be enticing with a new manager likely to come in during the close season.

With eight clean sheets in twenty eight appearances, Marshall has conceded 31 times as Derby have endured a poor season. Yet neither Vasilis Barkas, Conor Hazard or Scott Bain have impressed in stints between the sticks so the new manager may be tempted to remedy this in their first days on the job.

Marshall burst onto the scene with a captivating goalkeeping performance at the Nou Camp, earning Celtic a clean sheet with some breathtaking stops. The ex-Wigan goalkeeper started his career at Celtic before departing in 2007 after Gordon Strachan opted for Artur Boruc.
