Martin O’Neill on ‘Brilliant’ Postecoglou, Lennon criticism, Brian Clough and Jock Stein

Peter Martin on the PLZ Soccer Football Show has this morning posted his interview with Martin O’Neill where the conversation covers many topics where the former Celtic manager gives his views and provides plenty of insight on subjects ranging from his thoughts on Ange Postecoglou, the criticism of Neil Lennon and how he hopes that will all pass, the former teammates of Lennon’s and their punditry criticism of Lennon.

There’s plenty about Martin’s time at Celtic and his two big regrets plus some details on leaving Celtic due to family reasons, which were the one and only reason, as he loved the club. There’s insight into both Brian Clough and Jock Stein who told Martin that a Celtic scout once watched him but he’d not played very well. Martin ended up going to Nottingham Forest and didn’t do too badly but told Jock Stein that he’d loved to have played for Celtic.

On how Ange Postecoglou has done as Celtic manager, MON was full of praise. “He’s done brilliant, absolutely brilliant. He might be a bit disappointed about what happened last week, but it’s really terrific.

“I have much time for a lot of managers, but where I found that he was particularly good was that he came in, was not that well known and had a tough old start, but had to stick to his beliefs.

“He felt he can get this right and with a bit of time something will change for me. To his eternal credit he did exactly that and got it going. There might be some moment where he thinks that the tide turned for him, I don’t know you would have to speak to him.

“He has been marvellous. There treble was there for a moment or two, but it didn’t happen. But if you were to ask any Celtic fan about winning the league, it’s the top priority.”

A great listen…

Martin O’Neill was the guest of honour at the Newry Willie Maley Memorial Group dinner at the Kerrydale Suite last Friday, with Peter Martin also handling the interview and the Q&A with the former Celtic manager. Matt Corr has reported on this wonderful night raising funds for a brilliant initiative from these Celtic Supporters, earlier this week on The Celtic Star, see below…
