McAvennie tells Celtic to sign Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman

Frank McAvennie has told Celtic to go and sign Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman. The goalkeeper looks set to exit St James’ Park after falling down in Steve Bruce’s estimations and McAvennie told Football Insider that he could improve the standard of goalkeeper at Celtic.

Celtic have been linked with a move for the former England U21 (according to The Chronicle) and McAvennie believes that  the goalkeeping position is one that requires immediate attention at the club.

“I would love him up here. He looks like a decent boy, a talented keeper. Celtic don’t have one at the moment.

“It’s an area we need to improve, which is something I never thought I would say.

“Scott Bain and Vasilis Barkas are hopeless. Stick them together and you might have a half-decent keeper.”

Woodman played at Killie and Aberdeen but is likely to be fancying a permanent move this summer. Swansea will likely be keen on making a move for the player but McAvennie reckons that Celtic should challenge the Swans for his signature.

The player has two years remaining on his current deal and seems to be hesitant to remain at Newcastle if he is so far down the pecking order. Although, the rumour that The Magpies are interested in Celtic’s Kris Ajer may give rise to a player plus cash swap for Ajer with Woodman acting as a makeweight.

Woodman represents a long-term No.1 option. Much like Fraser Forster, Woodman has struggled to nail down a starting role at St James’ Park and has been forced to go on loan to play football. The 24-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan with Swansea City in the English Championship but couldn’t help them get promoted.

Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard have all been used in the last season but none impressed as Celtic repeatedly conceeded poor goals. Ange Postecoglou will need to address this imemdiately as he looks set to be named as the next manager of Celtic.
