Journalist suggests poor contract offer from Sheffield Wednesday resulted in Celtic coup

Liam Shaw looks to have decided to make a switch to Glasgow at the beginning of this year after Sheffield Wednesday refused to give him a modest pay increase during his new contract. Journalist Alan Biggs claims that Shaw was unimpressed by the deal offered by Wednesday as teammate Barry Bannan was offered terms of nearly £27k.

Shaw was seen as a coup with a number of clubs chasing the versatile midfielder. The 20-year-old agreed a switch from his boyhood club but was unable to help them avoid relegation to League One.

Shaw referred to the deal with Celtic as ‘impossible to turn down’ and it will be interesting to see the promising youngster join the club in the summer. Ange Postecoglou is favourite to get the job but will still be excited at the prospect of arriving in Glasgow’s East End. Shaw will likely only increase in value whilst Bannan, 31, will see his value depreciate.

Sheffield Wednesday were desperate to sign him on a new deal but the attraction to Celtic was clearly too much for the youngster. Glenn Loovens suggested that the player’s best position may be as a central defender, suggesting he will take a similar path as Kris Ajer, who arrived at Celtic as a midfielder and is comfortably the best defender at the club.
