Mellon reckons Celtic should sign Swiss goalkeeper

Former Dundee United manager Micky Mellon believes that Celtic need to try and capture his old goalkeeper at Tannadice, Benjamin Seigrist. The Swiss stopper was apparently in talks with Celtic recently regarding a move to Celtic Park, and Mellon believe the Bhoys need another addition in that area to compete on all fronts next year.

With Vasilis Barkas eventually finding pastures new – at least for now – it leaves Ange Postecoglou with Joe Hart, Scott Bain and highly-rated youngster, Tobi Oluwayemi within his ranks for next season. God forbid anything should happen to Joe Hart because Scott Bain has not filled anyone with confidence during his brief stints between the sticks. The former Dundee and Hibs ‘keeper has a bad knack for wanting to use his feet in situations that require safe handling.

Although Tobi Oluwayemi is highly regarded by those at Lennoxtown, his immediate future is too fragile to be expected to step-up if anything should befall the consistent Hart. But Mellon insists the answer is staring Celtic in the face with Seigrist and the player himself would provide experience and a solid work ethic.

Mellon said, via Daily Record: “He would be a great signing for Celtic because he has the ambition and character to do well there. There would be absolutely no problem with Benji ‘s temperament – he can handle playing for Celtic. With the amount of games they will have next season domestically and in Europe, they’ll need two keepers.

“All the big clubs need that to be successful now. And Siegrist alongside Joe Hart next season would give Celtic two brilliant options.”

We’ll see how this one develops over the coming weeks.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
