Milan goals highlight Celtic’s need for a new goalkeeper and right back in January

VASILIS BARKAS watched from the Celtic goals as Tom Rogic and Odsonne Edouard gave Celtic a two nil lead with 14 minutes on the clock. However, he was forced to pick the ball out of his net twice in as many minutes as the Serie A league leaders hit back to restore parity.

The £4.5m acquisition from AEK Athens and Greece’s No.1 has struggled since his move to Glasgow in the summer. The transition to life in Glasgow hasn’t been smooth for the 26-year-old but he has joined the club at a truly extraordinary time, where emotions are fraught.

However, Celtic appear to be a bit lost in the goalkeeping department since the departure of two stalwarts – Gordon and Forster. For Milan’s first goal, Ryan Christie’s rash challenge gave the Italians a chance to get back into the game. The mistake was Christie’s but Barkas set up the wall, moved them in his image and tried to defend his goal. Although, the ball flashed beyond him at the goalkeeper’s side and Milan were back in the game.

It is a tough game to judge Barkas in but Celtic need a goalkeeper that cam make big saves when he is called upon and thus far both Bain and Barkas have fallen below the required standard. The third Milan goal was poor defending but Hauge’s finish didn’t nestle into the far corner, Barkas’ positioning gave him a huge gap to aim for.

Forster Celebrates at Ibrox

Celtic need to ask the Fraser Forster question to Southampton and offer him whatever he wants to come back to Glasgow. Forster is second choice behind Alex McCarthy at Southampton and is yet to play any football this season but the £90k-a-week contract that he is on will surely keep him company. Celtic have, meanwhile, struggled without the commanding presence of Forster. Hampshire Live claim that the Saints could be willing to negotiate a deal for Forster and use Harry Lewis as the deputy to McCarthy.

Neil Lennon said that he was working away on bringing in new players – hopefully one of them is Fraser Forster.

The fourth goal was horrible viewing for the Celtic support as they chased an equaliser, Hatem Abd Elhamed half heartedly defended as Diaz lifted the ball over the slow Barkas. A right back and goalkeeper need to be high up on Neil Lennon’s shopping list. The defending has been poor but the start in Milan was sensational but the real takeaway from the latest Europa League defeat was how poor our defending is, allowing cheap, needless goals.

The lack of desire in the tackle from Elhamed epitomises all of Celtic’s defensive woes this season. No fight, no determination and breezed past.
