Mixed news for Celtic over Fraser Forster as former player discusses potential Chelsea move

It was clear that Southampton were hoping a Premier League side might show their interest in Fraser Forster this summer as an agreement with Celtic still hasn’t been reached.

The big keeper was outstanding last season at Celtic Park but his parent club will demand a Premier League fee, while his wages won’t be cheap either.

A report from Football Insider has looked at some words from former England keeper Paul Robinson about potential interest from Chelsea, and there’s mixed news from a Celtic point of view:

When it comes to spending power and you talk about Celtic and Chelsea – there is no competition. If it comes down to money Chelsea will win all day long.”

“I do not see them buying him as a number one given where he has been, even though he has done very well at Celtic but I do not see him as Chelsea’s number one. Caballero is a good backup goalkeeper but he is 38 now.”

“I just cannot see Forster going to Chelsea for any reason other than for financial reasons.”

That suggests he could even end up as the third choice player at Stamford Bridge if he goes there, which must be a situation that he wants to avoid.

Clearly money will be a major factor here and Southampton try to steer him towards a move to Chelsea, but they don’t have anyway of forcing him to do that.

It looks like the only option that will present first team football at a high level will be Celtic, so we will need to hope that he chooses sporting ambition over money at this point in his career.

There’s still no sign over where he’s likely to go at this point, but let’s hope Celtic can find a way to get him back.
