Mohanad Jeahze’s tough task in ousting Greg Taylor from this Celtic side

With Ange Postecoglou already letting it be known his preference is for the club’s transfer business to be done in time for the club beginning their pre-season preparations, it would appear one particular target is already at an advanced stage of talks.

As we advised the previously on The Celtic Star links with Mohanad Jeahze certainly seemed to have more substance than mere transfer rumour, and now Sky Sports Anthony Joseph – a usually reliable source – has taken to social media to confirm Celtic are in talks with the Hammarby left back and the 25 year old has advised his Swedish club that he is keen to move to Celtic.

“Celtic are in advanced talks with Hammarby over a deal to sign left-back Mohanad Jeahze. It’s understood the 25-year-old Iraq international told the Swedish club he wants to move to Scotland. A deal in the region of £2m is on the table & talks have progressed quickly today.”

Jeahze had previously intimated he was only willing to leave Hammarby for something ‘better’ and playing in front of 60,000 fans with the carrot of group stage Champions League football should therefore meet the players requirements.

With the manager stating clearly his wish for new signings to be on the flight to Austria for Celtic’s 10-day training camp in July, the job of getting this deal tied up will no doubt fall to new head of recruitment and scouting Mark Lawwell and Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson to get this deal over the line, and it appears from Anthony Joseph’s comments that the Jeahze deal is one very much in process.

Should he sign, Iraqi international left back Jeahze will be one of a smaller group of players joining Celtic in comparison to last summer’s acute need for quantity as well as quality, as Celtic’s squad required a complete overhaul.

Ange Postecoglou has already intimated he is looking for players who will improve key positions rather than act as squad players for the season ahead. As such you’d expect each signing to be a player the manager believes can compete in European football rather than be of a standard to provide simply domestic cover.

However, when it comes to the left back Mohanad Jeahze will have a fight on his hands to claim the position from Greg Taylor who has been a standout performer in 2022. It should be an interesting battle for the shirt to see play out.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.

  1. I think you are missing the point. Ange is looking at cover for rotation purposes, so players can be rested or recover from slight injuries etc. Both Taylor and Jeahze will not be competing. The will play under different circumstances and both will be first team regulars.
