Neil Lennon casts doubt over the prospect of Celtic park return for former hero

When considering a high profile signing, it’s always important to figure out what impact it would have on the team. Just because a great player is available, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worth using your resources to bring them in.

Victor Wanyama will always be fondly remembered at Celtic Park. His performance and goal against Barcelona may be his greatest moment, but he was clearly a great player and destined for the Premier League.

He’s been out of favour at Spurs, so it’s natural that he will start to get linked with his former team – especially when he can see how Fraser Forster has found his form again after returning to Glasgow.

The main problem comes when you consider the strength of Celtic’s midfield. If Wanyama comes in, it means one of Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham or Callum McGregor would probably need to go. You could possible toy with pushing McGregor further forward, but that’s not his best position and it would displace Ryan Christie. In short – where would he actually fit in?

The Daily Record has reported on some of Lenny’s comments from today’s AGM, and it seems that could be his concern as well. Speaking about the prospect of bringing him back from Spurs he said the following:

“(We’re looking) for a player like Wanyama, it’s about availability. They (Tottenham) have had a change of manager, then there’s affordability.”

“But it may not be an area we are looking to add to because of the way the midfield is functioning.”

“We are looking at the forward area, that may be the one area we are looking strengthen.”

Wanyama has barely played since September so it does look like he could do with a move somewhere, but unless somebody leaves it doesn’t look like there’s a place for him at Celtic Park just now.

Dominating against Barca

The comments about looking for a new striker do make more sense. Eddy has played a lot of football and will need a rest at some point. We’ve seen that Leigh Griffiths is a capable replacement, but it’s not fair on him or the club to leave him in a position where he would be the only option if the Frenchman picked up an injury or suspension.

It will be interesting to see what the club does in January. A new striker does look necessary where Wanyama would be a luxury option, but it’s possible that both could happen.
