Neil Lennon: How it All Went Pete Tong – Fans Protest after Ross County knock Celtic out of the League Cup

League Cup, 29 November 2020 Celtic 0-2 Ross County – It had been a remarkable consecutive run of domestic cup games without defeat stretching back to that penalty shoot out defeat in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 2016 against theRangers. The law of averages were against us and Ross County were in the right place at the right time as far as they were concerned and gleefully took full advantage. The online discount among the support spilled over with some fans turning up at the stadium at the final whistle to protest against the manager, the board and the players.

Afterwards Neil Lennon had this to say:

“I didn’t think there was a hell of a lot wrong with the performance. The body language of the players was good. They are trying to find solutions, as we all are.

“If you keep losing games, there is an expectation at this club, there’s a demand for excellence and there’s a demand for wins – I am fully aware of that. I am not standing here like the happy clapper saying everything’s okay, because it’s not. But we’ll do everything we can – if I’ve still got the opportunity to do that – to turn things around.

“Today’s result wouldn’t have helped, put it that way. They [the board]believe in me and I believe in what I’m trying to do. I know I’m repeating myself but we do believe we will turn this around and quickly.”

Below we will share some of the images from outside the stadium that night.

David Potter’s View: No Way Back Now for Lennon – “This afternoon disgraced and humiliated the green and white jerseys”

It hurts to say it, but now I must join those who say that our Manager has to go. There can now be no possible excuse for a performance like that that was unacceptable from front to back, and from the first minute to the last. It must now be said that this cannot go on. This afternoon disgraced and humiliated the green and white jerseys in a way that makes one wonder just exactly what is going on.

The Manager now will go, whatever anyone says to defend him. But the players will still be with us and the finger has to be pointed at them as well. Either they are simply not good enough, or even worse, they were trying to get their manager sacked. There was no cohesion, no co-ordination and no understanding of each other, and surely they must realise that although there were no supporters at the ground today, there were tens and maybe even hundreds of thousands throughout the world upset, angry and shattered by that performance.

There were three good chances duly missed by Ajeti, Elyounoussi and Edouard. In a game like this, these chances really must be taken. The rest of the game was the predictable pumping of the high ball into the penalty box and it being headed away by a Ross County defence that knew exactly how to deal with it. From a very early stage in the second half, it was obvious that we simply lacked the quality, and no excuse now is possible. Diego Laxalt was simply not there today, and that is a shame because I thought there was something here.

It is as well that we have a glorious past to look back on, for we have no present, and the future looks even worse. The new Manager will more or less have to start again, for the present squad are going nowhere. Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie are possibly all that we really have at the moment. The rest are either sub-standard, or possibly something worse than that, their heart is not in it. For Celtic, a player has to want to play for the club, and a player has to appreciate the hurt that feckless performances cause.

But well done, Ross County!

David Potter

Issues – Tactical ineptitude, lack of fight, unfit players, lack of interest in playing for the jersey. Beaten by Ross County at home. Even David Potter has had enough and calls for Celtic to act. If all fell on deaf ears sadly.
