Newcastle edge ahead of Celtic in pursuit of £5m-rated Tottenham defender

Newcastle United have edged ahead of Celtic in the pursuit of USA International Cameron Carter-Vickers. The 23-year-old has received interest from a number of clubs and is expected to depart Tottenham this summer; however, a source close to the player has disclosed to US sports journalist Larry Henry Jr that Newcastle are ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Hoops in the running for the central defender.

However, Henry Jr. admits that it is looking as if the player will either end up in Scotland or remaining in England.

Bournemouth, Newcastle and a number of clubs from mainland Europe have been linked with a move but given Celtic are in talks for Joe Hart and Carter-Vickers, a deal can be done in the coming days. Carter-Vickers played 90 mins in the 3-1 win over MK Dons last week but is expected to depart.

Carter-Vickers has just one year on his contract remaining and Spurs are likely looking to offload the player to avoid losing him for nothing. Bournemouth had the player last year and will likely fancy their chances in securing the player whilst Newcastle has the draw of Premier League football. Although, the pathway that Celtic offers is unique. Carter-Vickers can play European football, have access to top facilities and really make his mark on football in the UK after a period of time being loaned around the English Championship.

Celtic are in need of another central defender to partner Carl Starfelt and Carter-Vickers wouldn’t need to quarantine, which is a boost given the current quarantine measures.
