No Celtic bid yet for St Johnstone midfield star

Callum Davidson has confirmed that Celtic haven’t bid for Northern Irish International Ali McCann. The double-winning manager, who was surprisingly beaten to the Manager of the Year award, admitted that whilst there had been interest in his players, there had been no offers.

Speaking to The Courier, Davidson said that he hopes to keep his talented side together but did say that there had been interest in them.

“I think there has been interest but I don’t think there has been anything formal.

“I had no doubt there would be people interested with the way they played last season. Fingers crossed we can hold on to them all but if we do lose any, it’s only one.

“We want the squad to continue to move forward. That’s football – it’s not just St Johnstone. The same will be happening at Rangers, Celtic or Aberdeen.

“There will be players moving. We’ll see what happens in the next six to eight weeks.”

St Johnstone made history at Hampden last month by sealing a double in the Scottish Cup Final, beating Hibs 1-0 thanks to Shaun Rooney’s header.

St Johnstone’s Chairman Steve Brown admitted that it will take a bid of £2m to prise McCann from the club as the 21-year-old continues to impress for club and country. Celtic have been linked with the energetic midfielder in the past as the club plan a huge rebuild this summer. Ange Postecoglou has been announced as the new manager but just one of the tasks likely to be on the manager’s desk is identifying a new central midfielder to replace Scott Brown.

With Brown leaving, there was already a need to sign another central midfielder but with the news that Olivier Ntcham is nearing a switch to AEK Athens and Ryan Christie is a target for a number of clubs, Celtic need to sign one and maybe two midfielders to compete next season.
