No chance of signing Kellecher, but Vaessen is a realistic option

We’ve no chance of getting Kellecher, but Vaessen is a realistic option…

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, 16-03-2024, SPO, Van Donge & De Roo Stadion, Dutch eredivisie, season 2023 / 2024, during the match Excelsior – RKC, RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen Excelsior – RKC

Celtic were this weekend linked with RKC Waalwijk keeper Etienne Vaessen. Not much is known about the 28 year old who’s spent his entire career at the Dutch side, but a quick YouTube check suggests he’s a decent shot stopper while also comfortable with the ball at his feet. The latter is something Brendan admires in goalkeepers.

RKC are in relegation trouble and Vaessen is out of contract so with no fee involved it would pretty much be a risk free signing, and not a repeat of the Vasilis Barkas £5m disaster.

PSV are also apparently interested in his services, but Celtic have apparently stolen a march on the Eredivisie leaders as the Dutch giants are only willing to wait until the summer to make any proposed offer.

Vaessen is a much more realistic option than Liverpool back up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher who we’ve been heavily linked with recently. Kellecher is an excellent keeper, but with him being rated around the £15 million mark plus his high salary, it’s sadly a non-starter and Celtic will be looking at alternatives options.

Vaessen is a keeper with plenty of experience at a high level in the Dutch Eredivisie so he isn’t the worst option to replace Joe Hart. That will be no easy task for whoever Celtic signs and an experienced keeper is essential. Etienne Vaessen appears to fit the bill.

  1. Would agree but who is actually identifying players at this stage without anyone who’s meant to be in a position of doing so currently at the moment?
Personally believe 2 keepers will be signed with experience and a younger understudy in place imo?
Just don’t see Bain no longer being a need no more, especially when we seem to be trying to tackle the 8 homegrown rule without the need of Bain making up the numbers in that regards imo?
Some of the reports sound very positive upon his ability, and with a 1st choice keeper role in the offering, should put ourselves in a very strong position to getting in a very decent keeper, and hopefully one that can make the position there own for a number of seasons also?
Be interesting to see who is going to be in a position to be making such decisions upon potential players for positions available within the squad next season?
But not really interested at this stage as way to much to play for with the current crop of players we have imo?
