On This Day: Celtic make it 9-in-a-row, Beachball Sunday and Tribute to Cesar

THERE is not a lot of football being played right now across the world as Coronavirus takes hold – except Belarus, where vodka and saunas are meant to keep the virus at bay. However, thanks to @Lilze85 on Twitter, we can take a trip down memory lane and look at some of Celtic’s goals on this day. Celtic sealed the Treble back in 1969 after a brilliant display to put Rangers to the sword at Hampden.

1974 – FALKIRK 1 CELTIC 1

Celtic clinched 9-in-a-row after a 1-1 draw at Brockville. Falkirk were fighting for their lives in the top flight and started brightly against a Celtic side fatigued from European travels during the week and got their reward after three minutes. Celtic equalised through Kenny Dalglish who brilliantly evaded numerous defenders before scoring an excellent goal.

1985 – ABERDEEN 1 CELTIC 1

Celtic and Aberdeen shared the points at Pittodrie to all-but seal the league title for Alex Ferguson’s side. Celtic scored early through Roy Aitken’s penalty. Willie Miller equalised before Celtic had the ball in the net again but it was controversially ruled out.

1991 – HEARTS 0 CELTIC 1

Celtic earned a 1-0 victory over Hearts at Easter Road thanks to a goal from Charlie Nicholas.

1996 – PARTICK THISTLE 2 CELTIC 4

Tommy Burns’ Celtic side went into the game with a mathematical chance to win the league title. Van Hoojidonk scored two whilst Cadete and Mackay got the others. Celtic’s wait for a title would go on as Rangers defeated Aberdeen the following day to seal the trophy.

2003 – RANGERS 1 CElTIC 2

Following the win in Oporto versus Boavista, Celtic faced a daunting trip to Ibrox with the fate of the league title handing in the balance. It was dubbed ‘the original beachball Sunday’ as supporters looked forward to the trip to Seville the month after. Goals from John Hartson and Alan Thompson gave Celtic the victory and the initiative in the title race… but we won’t talk about that.

2008 – CELTIC 3 RANGERS 2

Celtic wrestled themselves back into the title race after a rough encounter with Rangers at Celtic Park. McDonald fired Celtic ahead early on, despite appearing marginally offside. Rangers hit back from two identical set plays from Davis. Weir scored the first and Cousin grabbed the second. A win was essential to Gordon Strachan’s side’s push for the title and anything but a defeat would essentially seal the league for Smith’s Rangers. McDonald’s deflected effort beat Alexander to draw the game level before half time. Barry Robson scored the winner from the spot as Celtic showed their grit and resilience.

The game would prove to be pivotal in winning the league title up at Tannadice.

2014 – CELTIC 6 ICT 0

Anthony Stokes scored a hat-trick as Celtic put on a show at Celtic Park. Stokes shared the goals with Griffiths, Ambrose and Pukki giving Neil Lennon’s side a comprehensive victory over the Highlanders.

2019 – CELTIC 1 KILMARNOCK 0

On an emotional day at Celtic Park, Celtic paid tribute to one of their greatest ever sons, Billy McNeill. The legendary captain, who famously lifted the European Cup in Lison, was celebrated by the Celtic family. It was a man wearing McNeill’s iconic No.5 that grabbed the winner in the 67th minute. It would be a vital goal as Celtic moved towards the 8th consecutive title in a row.
