On This Day in 2015, Ronny Deila’s Celtic side beat Motherwell 4-0 on a cold Wednesday evening. Deila’s side went top of the Premiership table thanks to a convincing display with goals from two defenders and hitman Leigh Griffiths.
It was the Dutchman that gave Celtic the lead with a towering header at the back post following a blocked corner from Stokes. The Irishman gathered the ball and fired it towards the back post, where the future Champions League and Premier League winner waited.
Griffiths doubled Celtic’s lead with a glanced header, again from a Stokes cross. It was a dominant display by Celtic but they spurned numerous chances to build upon their lead.
However, it was the returning Mikael Lustig that stole the show with a second half brace. A striker’s finish from Lustig on his return from a two-month lay off. Although his second was even better. Running into the box and diving onto the tempting ball from Leigh Griffiths, it was a goal of the season contender. The Swede was unlucky not to have a hat-trick as he hit the woodwork.
CELTIC: Gordon; Mathews, Van Dijk, Denayer, Izaguirre; Bitton, Brown; Stokes, Commons, Johansen; Griffiths. (Lustig ’45, Forrest ’64, Scepovic ’70)
