On This Day: Edouard’s chip and Forster penalty save in away draw in Europe

On This Day in 2020, Celtic travelled to face Copenhagen in the Europa League Round of 32 first leg. Neil Lennon’s side finished top of their group, beating Lazio, Rennes and Cluj in the competition and would look to continue their progress into the tournament.

Odsonne Edouard almost put Celtic 1-0 up within 25 seconds after his timely run was matched by a pass from Ryan Christie.

Edouard again forced a good save out the goalie before Ntcham’s shot was again blocked by the inspired keeper. Celtic were relentless in the opening exchanges and had their reward when Callum McGregor slid in Edouard – the Frenchman chipped the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

Despite the fast start, Celtic didn’t press on. Copenhagen pounced after half time and N’Doye equalised. Lennon’s team responded and McGregor should have played Edouard in during a 2v1 before the Copenhagen players recovered and CalMac shot over the bar.

French Eddy probably should’ve had a hat-trick but his display was overshadowed by the formidable frame of Fraser Forster, who saved a penalty with 15 mins to go.

The game would set Celtic up nicely going into the second leg at Celtic Park. However, the less said about that the better.

Celtic: Forster; Hayes, Jullien, Ajer, Frimpong; Brown, McGregor, Ntcham; Christie, Edouard, Forrest.

Subs: Bain, Bolingoli, Bayo, Bitton, Simunovic, Elyounoussi, Rogic
