On This Day: Happy Birthday Callum McGregor

Celtic captain Callum McGregor turns 29 today. The central midfielder started Scotland’s 4-1 over Armenia as he celebrated his birthday; however, the player will be able to finally relax for some time now before Ange’s team reconvene for pre-season. McGregor has been Celtic’s engine room for a number of years but he has taken on a new role with the captaincy.

McGregor had to step into the shoes of captain after Scott Brown left last year. Brown led through fight, power and determination whilst McGregor quietly leads through example, similar to Paul McStay. He is the beating heart of this Celtic team and we are lucky to have a player of his quality. He now takes his place in the history of this club as a Double-winning captain and will certainly eye progression next year with Celtic entering The Champions League.

Even while on International Duty, McGregor is so often omitted from the conversation with McGinn, Tierney and Robertson dominating but he continues to provide top performances even in a rigid formation. The skipper will be hoping to continue progressing his game next season under Ange.

Enjoy your birthday, Callum and enjoy the well-earned rest.
