On This Day: Larsson sends Celtic to Seville, Stein’s first trophy and win at Ibrox

The unbroken, illustrious history of Celtic has many famous days but the 24th of April has a number of successes, including Scottish Cups in 1937, 1954 and 1965. The latter was the first success of Jock Stein as Celtic manager. A win at Ibrox was sealed but most notably was Henrik’s goal in Portugal, taking Celtic to a UEFA Cup Final in Seville. Thanks to @LilZe_7, we are able to keep up to date with the various ongoings On This Day in Celtic’s history.

1937 – CELTIC 2 ABERDEEN 1

Celtic won the Scottish Cup after beating Aberdeen 2-1 at Hampden. The game boasted a record attendance of 147,365 supporters in the ground as Matt Armstrong’s goal for the Dons as Johnny Crum and Willie Buchanan scored for Celtic.

1954 – CELTIC 2 ABERDEEN 1

Celtic took the lead through an OG from Alec Young before the Dons hit back from kickoff through Paddy Buckley. However, Sean Fallon would grab the winner as Celtic would go on to lift the cup.

1965 – CELTIC 3 DUNFERMLINE 2

Yet another Scottish Cup win, this was Jock Stein’s first as manager. Bertie Auld scored twice before the great Billy McNeill grabbed the winner. It would be the first trophy of one of the greatest eras that the club has ever seen.

1982 – PARTICK 0 CELTIC 3

Celtic beat Partick Thistle 3-0 at Firhill with a a hat-trick from young Dannie Crainie. There was additional entertainment at half-time as a streaker entered the pitch. Thistle hit the woodwork on numerous occasions but a ruthless Celtic sealed the win.

2003 – BOAVISTA 0 CELTIC 1

Henrik Larsson, as he did so often, scored for Celtic in a big game. The Swede scored a 78th minute winner as the Celts sealed a place in the UEFA Cup final in Seville. After a 1-1 draw at home to the Portuguese side, Celtic knew they needed a big performance away from home and that came from Larsson, who poked the ball into the goal to send the travelling support wild.

2005 – RANGERS 1 CELTIC 2

Craig Bellamy and Stan Petrov scored as Celtic won at Ibrox to put themselves in a great position going into the run in as they sat 5 points clear. The less said about that season the better, but Bellamy ensured an impressive win at Ibrox.

2016 – CELTIC 1 ROSS COUNTY 1

Following the Scottish Cup defeat on penalties to Rangers, Celtic hosted Ross County at Celtic Park. A dull 1-1 ensued with Leigh Griffiths scoring for Celtic.
