On This Day: Scott Brown won the League at Rugby Park

On This Day in 2019, Celtic took a huge stride towards 8IAR with a late goal from Scott Brown delivering all three points at Rugby Park. Killie, then managed by Steve Clarke, were a difficult nut to crack and had given Celtic headaches across that campaign. Brendan Rodgers’ side were the better team but struggled in the final third on the astro (sound familiar?).

Rangers failed to win on the Saturday meaning that the Scottish Champions knew that three points would open up an eight point cushion at the top. Despite all their dominance, Celtic struggled to break Killie down. After Kirk Broadfoot was sent off for a tackle on Brown, Clarke instructed his team to defend their box and frustrate Celtic.

They did so until the 90th minute when a Callum McGregor corner was knocked down by Dedryck Boyata, falling to skipper Scott Brown. The skipper smashed it. The ball seemed to be heading over before it deflected off Alex Bruce and cannoned into the back of the net to send both stands filled with Celtic fans wild.

There was a slight pitch incursion with players and fans jubilant. Broony was sent off in the aftermath, receiving a second yellow and it would push the side towards title number eight.
