On This Day – Thunderbolt from Rogic and one hand on the title

On This Day in 2016, Tom Rogic scored a sensational goal in the dying embers of Celtic’s game against Kilmarnock. The classy-Australian struck from distance as Ronny Deila’s Celtic made a massive stride towards winning 5IAR.

Aberdeen had been trying to make it a fight for the finish in the Premiership and with Celtic kicking off early on the Saturday morning, any points dropped would open the door for the Dons in their 3pm kick-off. The Dons were 4 points behind Celtic that morning having played a game more.

It was all going according to plan for Derek McInnes as he prepared his team for their game at Fir Park. Motherwell actually asked for this game to be postpone as they were suffering from a sickness bug and were without most of their first team.

Ronny Deila’s Celtic side had huffed and puffed against Killie all afternoon but hadn’t managed to make the breakthrough.

Then Tom Rogic, on as a substitute for the last ten minutes for Nir Bitton, found some space and curled in an unstoppable 25 yarder into the top corner to send the Celtic supporters wild.

Then over at Fir Park, Motherwell somehow managed to win 2-1 with ex-Celt Scott McDonald scoring.

Rogic’s injury time winner, had the feeling of a league winning goal.

Here’s the Rogic never to be forgotten wonder strike at Rugby Park on this day in 2016…

Enjoyed being reminded about this game, and a brilliant goal! I often think that Aberdeen blew up against Motherwell BECAUSE they knew that Celtic had already won the lunch time kick off. There is a far greater link between how your team is doing and what is happening elsewhere than what anyone is prepared to admit! Psychology is a major factor in football, and I think that if that goal had not gone in, Aberdeen would have beaten Motherwell.
Conversely, this year, if Rangers had lost a few games, Celtic would have won more! There does seem to be a dynamic that if your rivals do well, you have to do badly! I hope our new Manager is aware of this, and can take steps to deal with it!
