Opinion: A loan deal for Glenn Murray makes sense for Celtic

Celtic have to add some firepower to their ranks in January if they are to tilt the balance of the Premiership title race back in their favour. The Hoops have been pretty short of options up top this season and were completely exposed in November when Lennon was forced to play Lewis Morgan at striker in the absence of Edouard.

Leigh Griffiths is a mere shell of the man who was once the most feared striker in all of Scotland. His injury troubles and personal issues have resulted in a huge downturn in his performances on the pitch and he is no longer someone that the club can rely on. Vakoun Issouf Bayo on the other hand has never managed to make an impression since moving to Parkhead and could soon be on the way out. The duo have combined to score just 4 goals this season and are quite clearly not good enough backup options for Edouard.

One player who does make sense for Celtic at this moment though is Glenn Murray. The 36-year-old has fallen behind Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly in the Brighton & Hove Albion pecking order. But over the past two seasons, he has shown himself to be a very capable striker, scoring 25 goals in the Premier League.

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are interested in the Englishman. But at 36 years of age, he does not hold much long-term value. Thus, the Hoops should try to get him on a loan deal till the end of the season and the Premier League side would surely be happy to get someone who has failed to either score or assist this season off their books. On the other hand, he can be a shrewd acquisition on the part of Celtic as a proven backup option to Odsonne Edouard.
