John Hughes believes Olivier Ntcham should have started vs the Rangers

It has already been a week since Celtic lost at home to the Rangers for the first time since 2010 but the defeat still stings as bad as ever. The manner in which the Hoops lost was a hard pill to swallow for the fans as they were completely dominated by Steven Gerrard’s men. And right now Neil Lennon has a couple of weeks off to reflect on the loss and better equip his team to take on the Rangers the next time around.

One man who could have made a difference on Sunday is Celtic’s French midfielder, Olivier Ntcham. At least that is according to John Hughes, who believes that Ntcham could have helped the Hoops win the midfield battle against the Rangers.

As reported by the Daily Record, the former Celtic star said:

“Rangers have had a solid shape all season. You need to match that in midfield, and I was hoping Ntcham would have played.

“McGregor and Brown were over-run in midfield. They two are trying to start the play and get up and support which is why I had hoped Ntcham would play in there.”

In hindsight, it is easy to say that Ntcham would have been of more use on the day than Mikey Johnston was. Heading into the game, Celtic had not looked in the best shape with the Frenchman on the pitch though and there were calls from a large portion of the fans for the inclusion of Mikey Johnston in the starting XI. But now that we know how that game plays out, Ntcham would have been the more sensible choice on the day.
