Opinion: Celtic Could Seal Derek McInnes’ Fate With Pittodrie Win

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has endured a torrid start to 2020 with his side scoring just once since they returned to action following the winter break – albeit against Dumbarton at Pittodrie. McInnes’ relationship with the Aberdeen faithful is deteriorating rapidly with a chorus of boos becoming more and more common in recent weeks.

Aberdeen face a tough week, a trip to Hamilton Accies on Tuesday and then they will host Celtic on Sunday at Pittodrie, a game that could result in McInnes receiving his marching orders from new Dons chairman Dave McCormack.

McInnes has been under severe pressure in recent weeks.

Celtic were last in Aberdeen in October and a first 45 minutes of scintillating attacking football had the Scottish Champions 4-0 up at half-time. McInnes and his team were booed off the pitch, despite coming out and managing to remain solid in the second half.

The goals from Odsonne Edouard, Jeremie Frimpong, Moi Elyounoussi and James Forrest blew the Dons away and had fans heading for the exits before half an hour had even transpired at Pittodrie. Celtic fans were jubilant and enjoyed their afternoon in the North East, which made it extra bitter for the home support.

Should McInnes’ week worsen – with anything less than a victory against Hamilton – he could welcome Celtic knowing that his position may be under severe scrutiny. The knives appear to be out for McInnes and should Celtic turn over Aberdeen with the ease that they managed in October, Dons fans might begin to move against the manager.

McInnes gave a glimpse of what his team can do after they left Ibrox with a point in a game that they might’ve hoped for more with all things considered. But draws with St Mirren, Rangers and Killie as well as the two home defeats to Motherwell and St Johnstone have heightened the calls for McInnes to be removed from his job, as the club fell one place from third to fourth in the league behind the ‘Well.

Albeit if McInnes can inspire his players to turn up in South Lanarkshire on Tuesday and give a good account of themselves against Celtic, it is likely that they will keep McInnes given his success with the North East club in recent years along with new chairman McCormack perhaps more lenient until the ex-Morton midfielder has had more time working with the new set up at the club.

McInnes has worked under tight conditions and has often been one of Celtic’s closest rivals in the last six years but supporters will want change should he fail to turn the fortunes of the Dons around. IF McInnes’ team fail to beat Hamilton Accies and are torn apart by Neil Lennon’s free-scoring Celtic, there could be a new man on the touchline at Pittodrie.
