Opinion: Celtic should hijack Bournemouth’s £400k deal for Jason Kerr

The Double-winning captain of St Johnstone, Jason Kerr, has emerged as a target for English Championship side Bournemouth; however, performances last season should have Celtic considering a move for the 24-year-old.

According to The Sun, Scott Parker’s Cherries are interested in signing the defender, who has just one year remaining on his deal with Callum Davidson’s history makers. This means that he may be available for as little as £400k, which should surely attract the interest of Celtic.

Celtic are in need of at least two central defenders with Mario Vuskovic touted as one of Ange Postecoglou’s first signings. The Croatian central defender is just 19 but will likely partner Christopher Jullien in the centre of defence if he signs. However, Jullien is still working back towards fitness and Celtic need to get their business done ahead of the European deadline for the game against FC Midtjylland.

Kerr would be ready to come into the team, offering a consistent choice for Postecoglou. The player is also accustomed to playing in a team that attempts to play aggressive, possession based football. He made 42 appearances, scoring 3 goals but he was solid for the Perth outfit as they enjoyed immense success last year. He wouldn’t be a first pick but given the success that he tasted at Hampden with the Saints, he may back himself to go to Celtic and try and make an impact.

Celtic have been linked with Erik Sviatchenko, who would certainly improve the quality of the defence but any deal may not be until after the Champions League Qualifiers. As a result, Celtic have just Lee O’Connor Stephen Welsh, Nir Bitton and Kris Ajer fit to play in defence but the latter may hope that by that point, he has sealed a new deal.

Fans were pining for a return to Celtic for Jack Hendry but Kerr is a better option than the ex-Dundee defender. Would you take the player?
