Opinion: Celtic should target Jonas Wind as Edouard’s replacement

Brighton and Southampton will ramp up their interest in Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard next week as the Frenchman nears an exit from Paradise. The Premier League duo look set to commence bidding around the £20m mark as the ex-PSG striker looks set to be the latest export from the club.

Celtic’s recruitment team will likely be using the time to identify targets to replace the striker. Kyogo Furuhashi, Albian Ajeti and Leigh Griffiths will remain as Edouard departs but the squad would be without a real physical presence in attack, something that the manager may look to rectify. One player that could prove to be a shrewd acquisition would be Jonas Wild of Copenhagen.

The Danish Internationalist is the son of Per Wind and at just 22 has a lot of potential with 37 goals and 19 assists in 90 appearances for Copenhagen. The player is clearly one to watch for the future and given that has yet to be fully realised given a knee injury in 2019 that kept him out for nearly a year. Despite that, he was part of the Denmark side that reached the Euro 2020 semi-finals this year and his star is continuing to rise. It would be no surprise that a number of teams have their eye on the player but Celtic could offer a unique pathway to the very top of the game, citing Kieran Tierney, Virgil Van Dijk, Kris Ajer or Jeremie Frimpong in terms of their development and sale as potential examples of what can be achieved by moving to Celtic.

Wind would likely represent the top end of Celtic’s options in attack, likely commanding a fee around £6m for the attacker. But similarly to Edouard, he will progress and increase in value as Celtic offers far more by way of development.

Edouard will likely leave in the next few weeks for £20m with a chunk of that money going to PSG. The club need to reinvest wisely and make sure that the next striker to come in the door is able to hit the ground running but also play in Ange’s style of play. Given that Wind is a player on the rise, he would certainly bring confidence and swagger to Celtic’s frontline as well as the desire to improve and play at a high level.

Celtic will have a number of players on their list to consider when Edouard leaves but one of them should definitely be Jonas Wind.
