Opinion – We’ve thrown away an advantage that should have been insurmountable

Ok here we are again. Another shambolic performance. Team all over the place, players looking at an abject loss as to how to play their way out of this alarming slump.

Dermott Desmond and Peter Lawwell really have a decision to make. Their very own D-Day. Their backs are to the wall and they have to look at the bigger picture… I think in all realism the prospect of The Ten is further away than it’s ever been.

This group of players… Collective Invincibles, winners and the backbone of a record breaking team now look like a team of individuals hoping for the best rather than a team who in previous seasons swept aside all before them.

If we don’t get someone in with the then stature of Martin O’Neil or dare I say it, Brendan Rodgers then next season there’ll be a mass exodus and a rebuilding of epic proportions.

As Celtic fans, particularly us of the older variety realise we have no divine right to turn up and expect 3 points or progression in cup tournaments.

The last four years have been among the best I’ve ever experienced, the successes, the banter… That walk into work where as a Celtic fan it felt great and like the team we were untouchable.

How can things go so drastically wrong in the short space of six months?

Realistically we can all draw the same conclusion.

We’re not stupid, or delusional, we knew the Success Express would come to a halt… We just didn’t expect it to come of the rails so spectacularly. Two wins in nine games. No words needed.

No what infuriates the support is that we had the opportunity to put such a gap between ourselves and every other rival in the league that we should have been so far out of sight they’d have needed a GPS to have a look at us.

We’ve thrown away an advantage that should have in all honesty been insurmountable.

No we don’t expect we’d win every game, we know that circumstances especially in one off games made it impossible the run would continue but given the advantage we had and over the course of a season we should have been the dominant team for a few years yet.

If Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell want to protect their legacy this is their Dunkirk.

Hail Hail
