Persistent Michail Antonio rumour and the injury to Celtic striker Hyeongyu Oh

There have been rumours flying about the past few days of a proposed bid by Celtic to land West Ham striker Antonio and Celtic manager revealed on Wednesday afternoon that he is going to be without Hyeongyu Oh for between four to six weeks after the South Korean striker suffered a calm injury in the pre-season friendly against Athletic Club.

Maybe that adds fuel to the speculation regarding the West Ham striker but let’s make one thing clear, this is a total non-starter and a rumour is all it is. I can say with supreme confidence that he won’t be signing for Celtic.

Why? Well for one he’s one a decent salary and one we would be unlikely to match. He’s also 33 and doesn’t fit into our transfer strategy, even if he comes with a relatively low transfer fee.

Antonio is a class act, the Jamaican international is a strong robust player, who can score goals, but he’s not a player we will be seeing anytime soon at Celtic Park. We have Kyogo, Brendan Rodgers sees Daizen Maeda as a striker and even though Hyeongyu Oh is injured at the moment it’s still a non-starter!

It seems the silly season is upon us regarding transfer rumours as we get into the last few weeks of the summer window. We are casting our net far and wide in the search for new talent, but in my opinion Michail Antonio is definitely not one of them and anyone believing anything different is fooling themselves.

It’s also worth mentioning that the last striker we brought in from West Ham was Albian Ajeti with Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon agreeing to pay £5m for the then out-of-favour West Ham striker. Look how that one panned out!
