Photo: Daily Mail in embarrassing Celtic goalkeeper gaffe

The Daily Mail made an embarrassing mistake as they mixed up Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with his father, the legendary Manchester Utd goalkeeper. The Dane kept another clean sheet in Saturday’s win over Hearts on Saturday, making a couple of smart stops.

In an article posted on Sunday evening, the Daily Mail team made the glaring error that cannot be attributed to a lack of interest in Scottish football and just laziness. The caption to a photograph of Schmeichel making a first half save was ‘Peter Schmeichel has helped Celtic to open their Premiership campaign with five clean sheets’.

It is a fairly embarrassing mistake for the Daily Mail to make, mainly because the Schmeichels are one of the most prominent father and son footballing duos. Moreover, it is frustrating as it is used in an article penned by the excellent Stephen McGowan, who covers Celtic and the Scottish game well.

Kasper followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a goalkeeper and winning the Premier League and FA Cup with Leicester City. However, fortunately for Celtic it is the 37-year-old in nets ahead of the UEFA Champions League kick-off against Slovan Bratislava and not Peter. Of course, Peter did win the trophy with Man Utd in 1999.
