Photo Of The Day: Celtic Fans In Milan 2007

Today’s photo of the day dates back to March 2007 when Celtic faced AC Milan in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Many thousands of fans made the trip to Italy, with the Celtic support split between the bottom and top tiers behind one of the goals at the San Siro; the Milan fans sandwiched in the middle tier.

The game ultimately ended in heartbreak as a great solo goal by Kaka handed AC Milan a 1-0 victory in extra time, but the memories of competing with Europe’s best in the knockout stages will live long in the memory. It is also worth noting that Milan went on to win the tournament that year!

After the match, AC Milan’s manager Carlo Ancelotti remarked: “This is what we need in Italy, this type of environment. This was the essence of sport. To hear the Celtic fans singing and chanting after the game was incredible.”
