Photo Of The Day: Coronation Time Was Here, ’53 That Was The Year

Today’s photo of the day shows one of Celtic’s greatest pre-Lisbon achievements, as the Hoops were crowned champions of Britain for the third time, having won all three British Cup competitions that had ever been held.

In 1902 the Bhoys won the British League Cup, in 1938 they won the Empire Exhibition Cup and then in 1953 they won the Coronation Cup.

In ’38 there was a show, Glasgow was the place to go
A model of the tower was the prize
England sent four of their best, they didn’t meet with much success
Because the trophy ended up in Paradise

Coronation time was here ’53 that was the year
Another four from England met there doom
They said we’ll have to try again
But like before it was in vain
Because the cup is in the Parkhead trophy room

It is a beautiful irony that Celtic always seem to triumph in events to celebrate the institutions of the British Empire!
