Photo Of The Day: Danny McGrain Collects A Pennant In The Bernabeu

The return of the photo of the day feature looks back to the 1980 European Cup Quarter Final when Celtic visited the Bernabeu to defend their 2-0 advantage from the first leg.

Club captain Danny McGrain can be seen exchanging pennants with José Martínez Sánchez, better known by his nickname of ‘Pirri’.

The versatile Spaniard captained Madrid and won 1 European Cup, 10 La Liga and 4 Spanish Cups with the club. A warrior, he played the 1971 final of the European Cup Winner’s Cup with his arm in a sling, and the 1975 Copa del Rey final with fever and a broken jaw.

Unfortunately for Celtic, his team successfully overturned the first leg deficit by beating the Hoops 3-0 in the Spanish capital. Nevertheless, the memories of the last time that Celtic reached this stage of the European Cup/Champions League are fantastic to look back on.
