Photo Of The Day: Eurover

Today’s photo of the day looks back to great European memories, with an eye on the upcoming Champions League campaign.

“Eurover” was the headline on the programme as Blackburn Rovers prepared to face Celtic in the 2nd leg of their famous UEFA Cup tie. The Hoops had of course won the first leg 1-0 in Glasgow, but they were far from impressive. Off nights happen though, and top teams grind out results on those occasions. Therefore, it was always likely to be a foolish statement when Graeme Sounness told his side that it was “men against boys”.

The second leg walkover happened, but not as Blackburn fans imagined. Indeed, it was Celtic who ran away with the tie, winning 2-0 without breaking sweat.

By the time the whistle had gone, Blackburn’s European run was over, while Celtic eventually reached the Final after eliminating the likes of Celta Vigo, Stuttgart, Liverpool et al.
