RB Salzburg boss interested in Celtic Job: “It’s an amazing club and it would be an honour to even be considered,” Jesse Marsch

Jesse Marsch joins Roy Keane and possibly Steve Clarke in warming to the opportunity to replace Neil Lennon as the manager of Celtic. Keane made it known at the weekend that he’d be interesting in taking the job while yesterday the Scotland manager refused to rule himself out of the running.

Now though the RB Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch has been speaking to BBC Sport and clearly stated his interest in managing Celtic.  The American coach had done well at the Austrian side after making a name for himself as a top coach in the MSL and could now be eyeing a move to Paradise to test himself at one of the biggest clubs in world football.

The bookies’ odds on  the RB Salzburg boss taking over at Celtic are sure to fall after his comments to the BBC. Currently the likes of Keane, Clarke, the Interim manager John Kennedy and the likes of Enzo Maresca and Chris Wilder (really?) have been attacking punters money and are among the favourites.

But Jesse Marsch’s admission that  he’d be interested in the Celtic job is likely to see him join the frontrunners.

The RB Salzburg head coach told BBC Sport : “I’ve heard (about the links to Celtic ). It’s an honour for me. Three or four years ago, being linked with a club like Celtic would literally be an impossibility for me. And now that this is where I am, I always just try to look at it in terms of, ‘what would the project look like?’

“Would we have similar ideas in how to build it the right way, invest in the academy, invest in young players and create this development process that I’m talking about? And not just focus on winning.

“Obviously I know that when you’re the coach of Celtic, winning is the most important thing. I know enough about it, to say of course it’s interesting.

“It’s an amazing club and it would be an honour to even be considered. But I also have a job to do here. My way of working is really to focus in on the job that I’m doing and concentrate on the moment. And the more that I do that the more other possibilities can arise.”

Marsch coached New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer, winning coach of the year in 2015 before moving to Germany in 2018 to become Ralf Rangnick’s assistant at Leipzig. He then took the reins at Salzburg the 2019, helping to develop young talents such as Erling Braut Haaland, Takumi Minamino, and Dominik Szoboszlai. Marsch has also been linked to top jobs in the German Bundesliga but is contracted to Salzburg until the summer of 2022, so Celtic would have to pay compensation to get their man.
