Reaction: “Celtic players will rue this one as they didn’t take their chances”

Disappointed Celtic fans have been giving their post-match reaction to the 1-0 defeat at Ibrox this afternoon in what was a frustrating afternoon for the vast Celtic support watching the match on television. Despite dominating possession in the first half Odsonne Edouard missed a sitter after being set-up by Kyogo and it was probably harder to miss the target than score for the French striker.

Goalless at the break the home side started brightly after the interval and were eventually rewarded by a goal from Helander who got a free header at a corner kick, giving Joe Hart no chance.

Kyogo forced the first save of the game from the third choice Ibrox keeper with Ryan Christie screaming for a pass, that possibly influenced the Japanese striker a few moments later when he attempted a pass when a shot was the better option.

It ended in a frustrating 1-0 win for the him side which leave Celtic with two successive away Scottish Premiership defeats having lost on the opening day at Tynecastle.

Here’s some early reaction from Celtic Supporters…

“Disappointing, but not disastrous. A lot to work on, and lessons will have been learned. Is it ever worth trying to jam in your best players at the expense of the naturals? Montgomery immediately more effective down the left. Balogun MOTM? No wonder. All right feet on the left,” John Hughes.

“Didn’t do enough to get anything from today. But the progress from the start of the season has been encouraging.
Even given the absence of Forrest and McCarthy the lack of options off the bench highlighted the need to get more quality. Do that and we can really kick on,” Celtic Wiki.

“Disappointing but no real complaints about the result, in a game of limited chances they took theirs and we never. It happens. More to come from this team no doubt about it,” Everything Celtic.

“That Rangers team has been built over 4 years and they were unbeaten in the league last season. Ange has had 6 weeks to transform our squad and they bet us with a set piece! We want instant success, but it will come! A lot of players first derby so we kick in from here,” Steve Hoops.

“Ange has done well considering the total mess he inherited but we are still 5 quality and experienced players off being ready to challenge for the title. A CH, LB, DCM, creative wide player and a Striker. This was never going to be a short journey but we are on the right road HH,” Celtic Gossip.

“Have to laugh at the amount of idiots on here turning into prime Guardiola getting the boot in big Ange. His players let him down. Christie, Edouard etc didn’t perform. How can you not start Edouard after the affect he had midweek? We had the chances and never took them. Simple,” Celtic Faithful.

“We dominated the 1st half. The second half was even and they took their only chance. Definitely not lambasting anyone for their performance, we just missed poor chances again. Just Edouard with that miss and Kyogo’s poor decision making. 26 in the last 7 games we have fluffed,” The Celtic Way (the fan not the disguised Mainstream Media version).

“Good game. Very even. Celtic the better team first half. Rangers responded well second half. Set piece goal won it but the Celtic players will rue this one as they didn’t take their chances. Awful feeling losing these games but all things being equal positive signs under Ange,” Chris Sutton.

Eduoard needs to be sold and a new striker brought in to replace him. Pushing Kyogo out to the left in order to accommodate Edouard, who has proved useless time and again in recent matches, was a bad tactical move. We saw the difference when Edouard was eventually taken off and Kyogo was back in the middle. Ryan Christie was also pretty pathetic today, as were Abada and Turnbull. These guys need to step up in the bigger games. Abada is only 19, to be fair, but Ange had to keep him on because Forrest is having another long holiday to himself. Never known a player to spend as much time on the sick bed as Forrest, it’s unacceptable. Celtic should have won that game today, it’s so disappointing. Ange had better be kicking down McKay’s door for new players over the next two days because losses against Alkmaar and now Rangers (bigger teams) is seriously worrying for the season ahead. The honeymoon period is coming to an end now and no amount of 6-0 victories against lowly Dundee can compensate for big losses like these.

    • So…we sack the manager if we lose again? We ARE going to lose again because it’s only been 7 or 8 weeks since we had a squad of demoralised pros and youth players. If you thought everything was going to turn round in that space of time more fool you. Moaning has become the favourite pastime of a lot of Celtic supporter unfortunately.

A weakened Rangers team with a rookie in goals who hardly had a save to make in 90 minutes? Maybe you saw some kind of progress in that – what I saw was a Celtic attack that struggled to make an impact after about 10 minutes, much like the Alkmaar game. Edouard, Turnbull and Christie earn more in a week than I earn in a year, they don’t get the luxury of being “demoralised” on wages like that. They either earn their wages or they go elsewhere. Same goes for the ever-injured Forrest. I’m sick of excuses – they’re well-paid professionals playing like amateurs.
