Reliable Greek journalist posts alternative Barkas update

As reported earlier on The Celtic Star, a report had emerged in Greece that Celtic were looking into the possibility of ripping up Vasilis Barkas’ contract at the club. With his non-existent impact since 2020 and only 2 appearance last season, it could have been a very plausible route the Celtic board could have taken to resolve the issue.

However, Greek journalist and reliable source on all things Greek football and Barkas – Giannis Chorianopoulos – has taken to Twitter to clear up the rumours surrounding the Barkas/Celtic situation. He has dismissed the report and intimated that Celtic will be holding out to see what offers come their way for the big Greek goalkeeper.

Chorianopoulos was the one who kept Celtic fans abreast of developments during the summer in which Barkas arrived at the gates of Parkhead. He has also kept us all informed with the ongoing interest in the stopper since he has dropped out of the reckoning as a viable goalkeeping option at Celtic Park.

Back in January he confirmed there was interest from Greece with AEK and others keen, as well as Sheffield United in the English Championship. However, the major stumbling block to any deal appeared to be Barkas’ wage demands; having been just given a lucrative contract with Celtic, he was unlikely to budge on accepting a far inferior offer to go on-loan.

26th December 2021; McDiarmid Park, Perth, Scotland; Scottish Premier League football, St Johnstone versus Celtic; Vasilis Barkas of Celtic is beaten by Chris Kane of St Johnstone header as he makes it 2-1 in the 69th minute, pulling a goal back for St Johnstone

It looks now as though all we can do is sit tight and pray that someone recognises the potential and room for improvement Barkas could still make between the goal. Still considerably young for a goalkeeper, hopefully a club takes a punt and relieves us all of this horrible nightmare we have endured for the past while.

Here’s the tweet from Giannis Chorianopoulos:

‘As it stands, Celtic have no plans to let Vasilis Barkas leave as a free agent. They will wait and see for any offers. 2021-22 season, Barkas had only 2 appearances with the Champions of Scotland.”

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
