Reliable journalists understand Celtic have finalised McCarthy deal

It all seems to be moving very quickly in the transfer market at Celtic at the moment. It remains to be seen if it is panic stations or not following the horrific losses to FC Midtjylland and Hearts last week; but even if it was, the impending arrival of Joe Hart and now James McCarthy are excellent signings regardless of the panic button being pushed.

The Glaswegian, who plays for Ireland, was on the books at Parkhead until he was 14, but with other talents at the club, he was let go to Hamilton. Unfortunately for Wee James, he would rather have been nowhere else in the world as a keen Celtic fan.

McCarthy was on the books at Crystal Palace until this summer, making 16 appearances in the Premier League for the Eagles. However, after becoming injury laden and with new boss Patrick Vieira making his own reinforcements in the centre of the park, McCarthy was made surplus to requirements which ultimately has forced him to find a club of his own.

Having watched Everton a lot in McCarthy’s prime due to my Toffee-supporting father watching every game, it would be an insane signing for Celtic should the boyhood Hoop join the club over the next few days. His work-rate is exemplary, with a tenacity similar to Scott Brown – just less aggression.

Add a willingness to help support the attack and a keen eye for a pass, and McCarthy will bring a similar sort of resonance that Thomas Gravesen brought from Everton; just without the Real Madrid part in between. Him, McGregor and Christie would be a very interesting proposition…
