Remember Dorus De Vries and don’t make the same mistake

Much talk of Joe Hart not fitting into Brendan’s side, Remember Dorus De Vries?

There’s been a bit of talk recently about the role Joe Hart has in Brendan’s plans. Not about his ability, but his suitability to fit into Brendan’s tactics of regularly playing the ball across the back.

Pat Bonner was one of a few who had his say on the matter as we reported last night on The Celtic Star (we never stop), yes the same Pat Bonner who was dubbed Dracula such was his fear of crosses. Pat said that he has doubts that Joe Hart will fit into Brendan’s plans as he’s not cut out for such tactics. Well Pat you would have been denied a career in modern football with such tactics, so better saying nothing eh?

Anyway it’s a bit premature of talk about Joe not cutting it under Brendan. Yes I think we need another keeper, but not one necessarily to replace Joe, maybe just a bit of quality competition.

One of the reasons Joe was surplus to requirements at Man City was due to Pep Guardiola’s similar tactics, so Joe’s role in similar set up will be scrutinised, but Ange Postecoglou also played a similar way and Joe was just fine.

Remember Dorus De Vries? The Dutch goalie who was signed by Brendan during his first spell at the club. An experienced goalkeeper and great with the ball at his feet. Dorus was brought in after doubts over Craig Gordon’s ability to fit into Brendan’s system.

The outcome? Dorus was indeed great with his feet, but no so good with his hands. Craig Gordon ultimately won his place back and became a vital part of Brendan’s history making side, due to his shot stopping ability. The true mark of a decent goalkeeper.
