Report: Celtic confident of signing James McCarthy

CELTIC appear to have found their 2009 transfer wishlist and are seemingly pursuing two targets that have been linked numerous times since then – Steven Fletcher and James McCarthy. McCarthy, 29, was linked last summer with a move before switching Everton for Crystal Palace but it appears that he could be ready to move on again according to reports from 90min.

The former Hamilton and Wigan midfielder grew up a Celtic supporter and has been linked a number of times in his career. Neil Lennon is well stocked in the midfield area but the report claims that Celtic are confident of getting a deal done – despite the high wages that someone like McCarthy is likely to demand.

With Brown, McGregor, Ntcham, Christie, Rogic and Soro all vying for midfield positions, it is unlikely that the clubs will look to add another unless they are pondering an offer for one of the aforementioned players. Lennon will know that there are more pressing areas to strength if the club are to secure 10IAR.

The report also continues to say that Celtic are looking at Paddy McNair as an alternative – suggesting that it may be a lazy link with a player that Celtic have previously shown interest in. McNair, a Rangers fan, plays as a right back, centre back and defensive midfielder – where Celtic have ample cover.
