Report suggests Brendan Rodgers is winning the race to sign Celtic defender Ajer

Once an agent decides it’s time to move a client on then they need to make it look like they have a lot of options, so it’s no surprise that Kristoffer Ajer’s name is appearing in reports every day.

The more clubs that are linked means they can ask for more money in negotiations, and it could also squeeze a a larger salary out of Celtic if they decide to sign a new contract instead.

It’s easy to link Brendan Rodgers with a move for any of his old favourites at Celtic, but it sounds like he might have a real chance of signing the Norwegian defender.

As reported by 90min via The Boot Room, Leicester are believed to be leading the chase to sign Ajer, but there’s plenty of other competition.

Everton are named as the main rivals just now, but Man United and AC Milan have also been credited with an interest by the report too.

They confirm that Celtic paid only £500k to sign him, so you have to think a sizeable profit will be made when he moves on. Kieran Tierney joined Arsenal for around £25m, so that should be the benchmark for any future sales.

The big thing for Ajer is making a choice that benefits his career. He knows if he stays at Celtic he will play in every game, he’ll have a serious chance to challenge for trophies and he should get a decent run of European games.

If he makes a bad move he could be in danger of being a back up who only gets to play late in games or in the cup competitions, and that could stall his long term development.

It’s important to stress that nothing has been agreed at this point, but the rumours about an exit keep coming.
