ST MIRREN have made a contract offer to Celtic’s Craig Gordon with the Scottish goalkeeper’s contract due to expire this summer. The 37-year-old has had to play second fiddle to Fraser Forster this season but the Scottish Sun are reporting that Jim Goodwin’s St Mirren have made an ambitious move for Gordon.
The report states that Celtic have offered Gordon new terms but that the goalkeeper is considering his options with him in the twilight of his career and remains focused on a Scotland recall.
St Mirren would offer Gordon an opportunity to play first team football; albeit at the lower end of the table. There will no doubt be a number of teams keen on taking on the former £9m player.
This would leave Neil Lennon with just one first team goalkeeper in Scott Bain with Forster’s loan deal due to expire as well. Whilst Forster remains a target for next season, the club remain hopeful that Gordon will agree to extend his six year stay at Celtic Park beyond this summer.
Should Celtic secure Gordon prior to sealing a return for Fraser Forster, the club should offer the ‘keeper a loan deal away in order to give him the chance at an International return. However, if Forster doesn’t return, Gordon can remain as the club’s number one.
