Sawyers’ ‘Unfinished Business’ at West Brom, as £3million deal agreed for former Celtic target

CELTIC target Romaine Sawyers has completed his £3million transfer from Brentford back to West Brom.

Sawyers was a young prospect at the Hawthorns but had to go to develop as a player at Brentford before earning his move back to the West Midlands. The former Brentford captain was a transfer target for Celtic with Neil Lennon having a £2million rejected a fortnight or so ago.

But the 27 year old, a former West Brom Academy player, had his heart set on completing ‘unfinished business’ at West Brom and he’s now completed his move which will see him play there for the next three years, with the club having an option of a fourth year to the contract.

Celtic had earlier missed out on signing midfielder target Raheem Harper from West Brom, when the player decided to sign a new deal at The Hawthorns rather than join the Treble Treble winners and possibly play in the Champions League.

Speaking to the official West Brom website, Sawyers outlined his reasons for going back to where it all began for him.

“It’s been a long time coming and feel like I have unfinished business,” Sawyers said.

“This is the first team that I have always wanted to play for and I’m delighted I’m now going to get that chance.

“I left the club when I was just a boy with a lot of potential. But I am coming back as a man who has matured as a player.

“It looks to me that we are assembling a strong group of players and I hope to add to that. The aim is promotion – that’s what we all want especially after just missing out last season.”

The St Kitts and Nevis international made 135 appearances for Brentford, scoring eight goals.

No doubt Sawyers will get the chance to chat to his new West Brom teammate Oli Burke about what its’s like playing for Celtic. Yet as West Brom’s new manager Slaven Bilic continues to add players this summer, you wonder how Burke is going to force his way into the side after his £15million transfer from RB Leipzig.

Is there an opportunity there for Celtic to go back in with a cut your losses bid for the Scottish internationalist who has yet to fully develop into a decent player, despite all the component parts being there?
