“Scenes in that away end” but it’s worth taking note of the reaction of the Celtic players

As Jota’s 87th minute goal sent the away end into a period of complete and utter title winning elation, it is also worth taking note of the reaction of the Celtic players.

This team has been put together over the course of just two transfer windows, as Ange Postecoglou set about rebuilding a Celtic squad that required major surgery as well as a huge injection of self- belief.

For many clubs the criticism of the modern player is that they are too detached from what it means to the rank and file when it comes to representing their football club, but with a manager, who puts as much importance in a players character as he does in their footballing ability, you can see from the response from the Celtic players that winning this league title will just as important to them, having been at the club just a few short month, as it is to the travelling support who put the miles in season after season supporting the Hoops.

Georgios Giakoumakis could have been forgiven for ruing his shot coming back off the bar and his chance at being the celebrated goalscorer. Instead, his reaction, as Jota forces the ball home, is as if he’s scored the winner himself.

Meanwhile Carl Starfelt chooses to celebrate by jumping on the back of a Celtic supporter – as do Giakoumakis and Ralston – and that’s after Greg Taylor moves faster than he’s shifted in any game to be the first reach a celebrating Jota, just as the winger launches into a celebratory assault on the corner flag, and moments before David Turnbull tests his recovered hamstring to the maximum, as he arrives just after Taylor to join in with the scenes of delirium.

It truly is incredible to have a Celtic team rebuilt in such a short space of time by Ange Postecoglou, but footballing matters aside it is a joy to see the team has also been built with the character of the players in mind.

After a season of sulks and wantaways and even our players not even celebrating a Celtic goal, having that from the Celtic team is just as impressive as anything they’ve achieved on the pitch – and there are too few clubs these days who could say they have players who get it quite like the team that Ange built.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
