Scott Brown made decision to leave Celtic last year

Scott Brown played his final game for Celtic yesterday at Easter Road. The 35-year-old Celtic captain bowed out after 620 appearances and 22 trophies in the Green and White. However, Brown has admitted that the decision to leave Celtic was made last year and not in response to the poor season that the club suffered.

Brown revealed at full time, as reported by the Record, that he made the decision to leave Celtic ahead of the potentially historic season. The club would secure a Quadruple Treble in December, allowing Brown to leave as a history maker, even if 10IAR was not won.

“My mind was made up at the start of the season. I wanted a new challenge and I knew it was either go and do 10 or finish on nine with a quadruple Treble.

“I wanted to give it one last go and see it as far as I possibly could – and the board and everyone upstairs have been fantastic with me.

“They offered me a new deal to stay and be part of it but I wanted to see how it worked with a different club.

“I had a fantastic time at Hibs. I came to Celtic eventually and had a fantastic time, and now it’s for me to try and push Aberdeen as far as I possibly can with Stephen Glass and Allan Russell, and look forward to the future in coaching with a little bit of playing as well.”

Brown leaves Celtic to reunite with his former Hibernian teammate Stephen Glass. The deal offers him some security as it is a two-year deal which encapsulate both playing and coaching, which for a soon to be 36-year-old is highly desirable. You would not rule out seeing the player return to Celtic in a managerial capacity at some point in the next few years.

Celtic are about to undergo a colossal rebuilding job and the hope is that Eddie Howe can be announced as soon as possible to begin the work. A new captain and a number of players are required to build back from the disappointment of this season.
