Shock News – Copenhagen sell top scorer Sotiriou to Astana ahead of Celtic clash

INCREDIBLE NEWS coming out of Copenhagen two days before the game with Celtic…

Have Copenhagen thrown in the towel in the Europa League tie with Celtic?

It certainly appears that way because with just 48 hours before the first leg kicks off on Thursday night, we learn that Celtic’s Europa League rivals have sold their best player and top scorer to Astana!

Unbelievably their star player Pieros Sotiriou was allowed to leave the Copenhagen training camp yesterday for the last time to travel to Kazakhstan today to complete a shock £4million transfer. The Cypriot striker would have been the biggest threat to Celtic on Thursday evening but now he’s out of the equation.

The 27-year-old striker played every minute in their six group stage matches and has scored 13 times this season for Copenhagen. And the fact that they were plotting to sell their striker gives credibility to the claims from Patryk Klimala’s side of the row that Copenhagen were looking to sign him in January.

Can you imagine the scenes if Celtic shocked our fan-base by selling Odsonne Edouard today ahead of the European tie and with the league title race being neck and neck?

The shock transfer is a huge blow to Copenhagen and has left Stale Solbakken completely stunning with the manager accepting that it has implications in the Europa League tie against Celtic.

“The timing could be better. I acknowledge that. Our wish was that the transfer would happen in a few weeks’ time but we got a good offer,” he admitted to the Media, as reported by Scottish Sun.

“It is not a super offer, but I would refer to it as an acceptable offer and that’s why we sell him now.

“Of course it’s a pity that it happens before our matches against Celtic. But I am convinced that with Dame N’Doye, Michael Santos and Mikkel Kaufmann we will probably be okay.”

Or possibly not. Sotiriou apparently broke down in tears as he said his goodbyes to his teammates. The Copenhagen support is rightly going to be annoyed at the timing of this transfer and a decent start to the game on Thursday might see the crowd turn on their team.
