SK Suduva v Celtic, our Munich empties, Shame’s violence v Maribor

SO Celtic will play SK Suduva in the Europa League play-off round.

Celtic’s SLO John Paul Taylor has confirmed that the first leg will be next Thursday 23 August, and that he is still awaiting a kick-off time.

After we lost to Basel in the Champions League in August 2002, we went on a remarkable journey that took us all the way to Seville. Our first opponents in the UEFA Cup, after the disappointment in Switzerland (where we lost 2-0 after winning the first leg 3-1) was SK Suduva.

We put ten goals past them then. We might need to do the same again the way we are currently defending!

Remember last season when we were in Munich? Despite the result, the Celtic support were a complete credit to themselves, the club and the country. They made plenty of friends there, as indeed they did in Athens the other night. We were welcomed by the AEK Athens fans who the previous week were applauded as they arrived at Celtic Park.

The Evening Times though ran a story about the mess that we left in the main square in Munich. It was petty, nasty and missed the point completely. They called the Celtic fans ‘piglets’ you may recall.

The German police then clarified the situation saying that due to the on-going terrorist threats they had removed all bins from the square and the local authorities had people in place to tidy the cans etc as soon as the fans headed to the ground.

Celtic had to issue a statement about all of this.

“The city’s police praised the Celtic fans for their behaviour both before and after the game, while the fans inside Allianz Arena were vocal in their support throughout the 90 minutes despite it being a tough night for the Hoops, who lost the game 3-0.

“Celtic would like to thank our fans for their support of the team, as always, and the club is also looking forward to welcoming Bayern Munich fans to Paradise on October 31.”

Last night there were videos and photographs all over social media showing more trouble involving Rangers supporters.

How is this being featured in the Evening Times today? And it is only the latest incident involving these fans this season.

They had a running street battle with Wigan fans, stabbed two Croatian visitors, have had bottle throwing incidents at Aberdeen and again at Ibrox at the weekend, there has been racist videos with a Rangers supporter disgracefully racially abusing young children on an earlier European trip.

That versus some empty cans and bottles left on the street in Munich…So if we are “Piglets’ wonder how they will refer to Scotland’s Shame?
