Starfelt’s Start at Celtic: “We need to get behind Carl and show him love. There’s a good player in there”

“We have good confidence. We are on a good streak, both offensively and defensively. We feel in the squad very comfortable with the playing system and good confidence which will hopefully help us.” Carl Starfelt…

Carl Starfelt spoke to the mainstream media ahead of Celtic heading to Glasgow Airport to catch the club’s private flight to Amsterdam ahead of tomorrow evening’s second leg of the Europa League Play-off against AK Alkmaar, or as some of the hacks like to call them, the third best team in The Netherlands.

Today the hacks were trying to get the central defender – who was given an international call-up by Sweden this week – to admit that he’s possibly had a few dodgy moments in matches so far. The player basically arrived one day, trained the next and made his debut the following day – give him a break, for heaven’s sake!

We meant to cover this point the other day but never got round to it. After a brilliant 2-0 win over AZ Alkmaar, who the Swedish defender reminds us today are a top, top side, Starfelt was actually trending on Twitter. Having a quick look and it was our supporters giving the guy pelters – we’d just won an important Europa League match and the team played brilliantly!

Starfelt today talks of still staying in the hotel as he awaits his ‘apartment’ becoming available, he mentions that the limited number of training sessions he’s had with the squad is still small because of the game every 3 or 4 days schedule and promises that he is going to improve as he finds his feet in a new country and at a new club playing a new style of football…basically give the guy a break!

The first comment below the Celtic video on You Tube says this: “We need to get behind Carl and show him love. There’s a good player in there. He’s confident and has the right attitude.”

Starfelt was full of praise for the Celtic Academy boys playing in the back four. Both Anthony Ralston and Stephen Welsh could possibly have been expecting an international call-up from Steve Clarke this week. Remarkable that Ralston is overlooked while a benchwarmer from Ibrox makes the squad. Things at the SFA never change do they?  But for the Celtic support, if not the players, it’s no bad thing that two of our boys aren’t playing in these Scotland games.

Here’s Carl Starfelt’s mainstream media conference from today…

Thanks for highlighting my YouTube comment on Carl Starfelt’s media conference today, on to your site.
    Hail Hail.

    • Hi Davie – the article was done before I noticed your comment on You Tube, totally agree with what you said so used as the headline! HH

  2. Important, I think, for the support NOT to turn on Carl. I agree there is a good player there, but I also agree that he is not off to the best of starts. That does not however justify some of the dreadful stuff I have read about him on Social Media by some so-called supporters. Give him a break until he finds his feet.
