Striker willing to take a pay cut to join Celtic if their interest resurfaces

If you want to know how ridiculous the money is down south, then a fringe player at an average Championship earning more than most Celtic players tells you all you need to know.

Jordan Rhodes was a big deal at one point, he just couldn’t stop scoring and looked like he might finally be the answer to Scotland’s striker issues too.

Now he’s largely a forgotten man, he can’t get into the Sheffield Wednesday team and it looks like he could do with a move.

There have been rumours of interest from Celtic in the past, and a report from Football League World has given an interesting update.

They claim that Celtic made a late move to sign him in January, but his £40k per week wages seem like a big problem.

Obviously that move didn’t go through, but they go on to state that he would take a pay cut to force though a move to Celtic in the Summer. He’s also out of contract, so Celtic could sign him for free if needed.

Although it sounds like he would jump at the chance to move to Glasgow, you do have to wonder what role he would actually play in Neil Lennon’s squad.

Could he challenge Griffiths for the back up role?

There’s no chance the fans would accept him as a straight replacement for Odsonne Edouard if he left, so the best situation would be to challenge Leigh Griffiths for the back up role.

That could then make Vakoun Bayo or Patryck Klimala expendable, but the Polish striker is a recent arrival so it seems unlikely that he might move.

It’s likely that this is Rhodes’ agent trying to generate some interest through the media, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him.
