Summer Celtic target Taylor Harwood-Bellis tearing up English Championship with Burnley

During the summer, we were linked with a plethora of talent as Ange Postecoglou sought to bolster his squad for a hectic schedule, which included a first tilt at UEFA Champions League group stage football for the Greek-Aussie. The big man meticulously planned and researched his targets – as he always does – but in the end we only signed a handful of the linked names.

Alexandro Bernabei arrived from Lanus to compete with Greg Taylor for the left-back spot, Moritz Jenz was brought in after failing to complete a deal for the big centre-half the year before, and Aaron Mooy, Benjamin Seigrist, and Sead Haksabanovic also joined the ranks as we looked to improve the squad depth.

One of the more prominent stories during the summer transfer window was the reputed interest in Manchester City youngster, Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The 20-year-old central defender was highly regarded at the Etihad but with an awesome roster of international centre-backs on the books, the player was seeking pastures new.

City were looking to loan the player and the Hoops were looking for such a deal for such a player as Harwood-Bellis. However, the move never materialised as new Burnley boss, Vincent Kompany swooped having prior knowledge of the young Englishman through the City youth ranks. He decided to join the Turf Moor outfit and we signed long-term target, Moritz Jenz.

Taylor is having a wonderful season in the English Championship and has been earning plaudits for his maturity and style at the heart of the young Burnley defence. He’s managed 22 games, one goal, two assists, whilst maintaining an 85% passing accuracy. Not to mention his winning of 64% of his duels. He’s destined to make a name for himself in the game and is highlighting his potential regularly.

It remains to be seen if Burnley have an option-to-buy included in Harwood-Bellis’ current loan deal. Perhaps Ange thought better of it as there was no possibility of bringing him to Celtic Park permanently if he did well in a Celtic jersey.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
