Sydney Cup organisers look to capture spirit of Lisbon as Inter Milan touted to join

Celtic could be set to face Inter Milan in Australia as the organisers of the Sydney Cup look to capture the Spirit of Lisbon by signing up the Serie A giants to take part in Ange’s Homecoming Tour. Inter are being sounded out as the organisers look to recreate the 1967 European Cup Final, according to reports.

According to Celts Are Here, Simone Inzaghi’s outfit have been identified as being the big-ticket side needed to match a team of Celtic’s status and repute.

With the World Cup taking place in November, an early winter break has been pencilled in for the Scottish clubs and the rest of Europe as the stars take their place at the tournament in Qatar. Celtic have signed up to play the friendlies in Australia. The move is said to net Celtic more money than prize money from winning the Cinch Premiership.

The iconic match-up between the Green and White Hoops and the Black and Blue stripes met in the ’67 Final in Lisbon with goals from Gemmell and Chalmers sealing the trophy for Jock Stein’s immortal side.

Rangers were scheduled to take part in the competition but due to pressures from their support, they surrendered and withdrew leaving their fans in Australia with tickets to Celtic friendlies. The fall-out from their decision to withdraw looks set to continue but they were always only-ever a support act.
