Talks underway – Celtic ponder £5m bid for Croatian defender

Celtic are said to be considering a £5m move for Mario Vuskovic from Hajduk Split in Croatia. The Scottish Sun is claiming that talks are underway between Celtic and the Croatian outfit with Ange Postecoglou in desperate need of quality recruits this summer.

Kris Ajer will likely depart with a Bundesliga club the likeliest destination leaving just Christopher Jullien as the only first team centre back with Stephen Welsh a handy option as back-up. Vuskovic was part of the Croatia side that knocked out England in the U21s Euros group stages and is likely to attract interest from clubs around Europe, with Serie A side Torino said to have been extremely keen on launching a bid for the talented centre-back.

Celtic could act swiftly to hijack the move to Italy, perhaps offering the examples of players like Virgil Van Dijk and the unique pathway that a switch to Paradise can offer. Postecoglou has been preparing to sign a number of  players in key positions, especially given he had a period in quarantine to identify talent. Now, the Australian has arrived in Glasgow and is ready to begin work – starting with training at Lennoxtown tomorrow.

Celtic have poached a centre back from Croatia before, taking Jozo Šimunović to Glasgow from the Croatian capital of Zagreb. The Croatian defender joined from Dinamo Zagreb in 2015 following Virgil Van Dijk’s departure for Southampton. Šimunović will be remembered for that tackle on Kenny Miller in the 5-1 win at Ibrox in April 2017 and he left the club having won five Premiership titles and a number of trophies as well.
